Gynecomastia Surgery
Candidates for Gynecomastia Surgery should be healthy and emotionally stable. It is best for the patient to have firm elastic skin that will reshape to the body's new contours.
Don't be misinformed by thinking that Gynecomastia surgery is a substitute for weight loss. It's ironic that obese men are more likely to have this condition, yet because of their size and health risks, they are less viable candidates for the procedure.
Generally, for obese patients, weight loss is the first recommendation to correct the enlarged breasts. If the breast size does not decrease after weight loss, surgery may be required.
Additionally, patients who drink excessively or smoke marijuana will not be considered good candidates for the operation. These drugs can actually bring on the symptoms of Gynecomastia. It is recommended that patients stop these habits to minimize the enlargement or even make it go away completely before opting to a surgical solution.
The procedure can be carried out in many different variations. At the beginning of the procedure, medications are administered through intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Your physician will make their best recommendation.
Liposuction will be administered to remove the excess fatty tissue from the breast area. A thin, hollow tube called a "cannula" is moved back and forth through controlled motions after being inserted into the breast tissue. This loosens the fat for suction.
Excision techniques may be performed where glandular tissue is removed to correct the gynecomastia. Often, excision is used in conjunction with liposuction during surgery.
Know that there are various techniques used in Gynecomastia surgery. The ones outlined here are simply a glimpse at what you can potentially expect.
